Re: 3 hunting rifles
Exactly. :)
It is exceedingly dangerous to mix common sense with wish lists.
There is nothing short of dangerous game that I would not hunt with a 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5x55, .270 win, 7x57, 7x64, .280 Rem, .308 win, .30-'06, .300 win mag, .300 wsm, .300 H&H...
But, I can tell you, from spending many nights around camp fires and bar counters, with hunters from all over the world that there is very little logic or science when it comes to favorite calibers.

Re: 3 hunting rifles
Yes, but then you would get the classic wish list with something like a .22 Savage high Power, a .275 Rigby and a .318 Westley Richards.
The faster is better, wish list with the .220 swift, the .264 win mag and the .300 win mag.
The slower is betterder, wish list with the .22 Hornet, the 6.5x54 MS and the .303 British.
The weirder, Germanic is even more betterder, wish list with the 5.6x57, the 6.5x68 and the 8x68.
The mildcat, wish list with the 6x45, the .270 Sabi and the .338 Sabi.
The wildcat, wish list with the 6mm Mach IV, the 6.5 STW and the .300 Kong.
And so on, and so forth...

Re: 3 hunting rifles
I think you guys are overthinking this. The answer is simple:
1) .308
2) another .308
3) yet another .308
In reality the 2nd and 3rd would be superfluous because a single 308 is enough to do anything for the rest of your life but the OP did insist that we list 3...........

Re: 3 hunting rifles
The three I currently have:
22LR - fun gun and good for cheap trigger time.
6.5CM - long range target and some hunting.
308Win - everything else up to Eland and some long range target.
If ammo was free:
22LR - still a fun gun.
7mm or 280 something.

Re: 3 hunting rifles
I think this is close.
To improve just a little…
.260Rem/6.5x55 - With a semi bull barrel for those long voorsit type hunts on small game.
7x64 - Go to for everything, anywhere launching 160gr Partitions.
9.3x62 - Bushveld for those hunts when Eland or so are on the menu.

Re: 3 hunting rifles
Bearing in mind I hunt most Karoo / N Cape where shots a little longer…
- 243 for lighter game (Springbok, pigs etc) - could also just go with .222, .223 or 22-250
- 7x64 for almost everything else - substitute 6.5 xxx, 270, 308, 30-06, 7mm RM, 300 WM etc
- 375H&H for very big game (eland bulls, giraffe, buff hopefully one day) and occasional bush veld hunting

Re: 3 hunting rifles
My only question is why are you limiting it to 3 rifles?
Don’t take life too seriously, no one gets out alive.
