Default Article: "Durban's stolen ammunition used to attack cops"

    https://www.news24.com/news24/southa...-cops-20210731

Gunmen, who fired on police officers conducting a raid in Lamontville, south of Durban, were armed with stolen ammunition looted from a container during the rampant unrest which beset KwaZulu-Natal.

News24 can reveal that bullet casings recovered from the shooting scene on Thursday were linked to the cache of nearly 1.5 million rounds of ammunition spirited away from an unguarded container depot in Mobeni when thousands of looters rampaged through the south Durban industrial district.

Less than two weeks after the ammunition was stolen, this is the most unambiguous indication yet that illicit ammunition has fallen into criminal hands, with experts warning that the theft will spur a rise in deadly shooting incidents and violent crime.

What did the media expect haha that it was going to end up being used for range use?

"Fallen into criminal hands" sounds a bit like what happens with the rain. This seemed much more like a borehole drilling, pumping and irrigation scenario to me. I expect the cover up on this to make the grabber procurement one look like a pantomime rehearsal.

Quite ironic really. Ammunition, some of which was destined for the police, ultimately used against the police, because the police failed to protect it.

Ironic no, unforgivable, yes. Heads should have rolled.

I agree, but considering the minister for police says he didn't know that his top officer had a court judgement against him, until very recently, tells you all you need to know.
They're all in it up to the neck. I would be very surprised if anyone was held culpable for the ammunition, other than some poor sod miles down the chain of command, who will sacrificed the moment it gets to hot.

How did they determine the used brass was from this particular heist?

Exactly, I have never seen modern brass with any lot number or date on it. Just manufacturer and calibre and sometimes neither

1,5 million rounds of ammo is about 21 tons if my math is correct. Thieves must've had quite the logistics chain to pull that off
