TSSX by David Frank Allen, on Flickr
The bullet from the kudu. Entered almost exactly mid height behind shoulder. It was dark already almost 22h00 when animal was finally hanging at farm, I simply forgot to check in carcass for exact story. I saw both lungs damaged and assume the spine was broken because animal just folded on the spot, hind legs slightly before the front legs and it raised its head for a short while before expiring.
Caliber 7mm-08
Bullet weight 120 Gr Barnes TTSX - velocity at barrel 2969 fps. - POI 146 m
Recovered shank 75.6 Gr
Recovered piece 22.8 Gr
Total recovered bullet in two pieces 98.4 gr - 21.6 gr shed during work out.
The recovered bullets were found under skin on far side and recovery of bullet cuts can be seen on hide in the kudu photo - the top hole being the shank and lower hole the piece.

I would be impressed if any one can guess the horns.

First let me say that the horn length of this kudu is not important, it will always be the young man's first kudu. And being a young bull, it is a perfect first kudu for a young man.
Secondly, judging horn length from a photo is always very difficult, but especially so in an immature animal like this one. The bull in the photo is 2˝-3 years old. A kudu bull's horns are fully developed at 6-7 years.

T, I am far from a trophy hunter and for myself I have only ever measured one bull because of the "wow" factor. I seriously mean one bull. I have only ever shot one big horned kudu and it measured 49 inch, the rest were all less than that by 20/30 % in horn.
I am how ever very into weight, "how big is it".
Being this boys first Bull, there has been much talk and speculation about how big its horns will be, while dozing off I heard all the chatter, " I hope its a 60 " one, but I will be happy with 50 " and such drowsy boys chatter.
Mom, Dad, brother and dogs were all present for the photo's and the horns do look big, especially with him behind them. Part of his mounting them process is knowing what they are - part of the memory is knowing what they are.
Yes estimating the horns is never easy, for me at least.
