Default What makes the Ruger 10/22 special?

Been meaning to ask this for some time now, why is this ugly thing special?
It looks kinda less than beautiful, its just a .22 and its ugly, so why is it so redeemed?

As far as I understand one of the reasons it is popular because of the huge aftermarket for it. As far as I understand (in the US at least), you can essentially build a 10/22 without using a single Ruger part. I haven't shot one before, so I can't say whether they are nice to shoot.

Like rem 700's they became an affordable, popular platform and all the aftermarket improvements followed, as well as much improved (and more expensive) clones/copies of the action. There is a huge range of barrels, stocks and parts.

A basic 10/22 out of the box is nothing special but people get into modifying them and 'tricking them out' as match guns.

A tricked out 10/22 clone is the go-to rifle for Precision rim fire competitions. 10 aimed shots in 2 min at varying distances. The combination of no recoil and staying on target and getting all the shots away. This with a rig capable of sub MOA with the right ammo. Grey Birch and Thompson Contender make good versions.

It isn't, but in reality there's not so many .22LR semiautos available and this is one of the affordable few. Within the so called 'Survivalist Community' 10/22 has undeservingly been lifted on a pedestal thus it is a 'must have' if you want to survive the next apocalyptic event. The logic of this escapes me, but then again does it really matter.

One of the major factors seem the be the ad nauseam repeated chant 'Even the Israeli military uses it as a sniper rifle'. No they don't. As state oppression specialists they use the 10/22 as a crowd control weapon with which they shoot at the agitators' kneecaps or in the face to make them concentrate on their pain, not agitating the crowd.

Things that count in the 10/22's favour:

    1. It is less ugly than most other .22 selfloaders. Seriously. Look at the Gevarm, for example.
    2. More reliable or maybe less unreliable than most other .22 selfloaders. With a clean chamber, lubed action and preferred ammo it actually runs pretty well.
    3. It's been in production since 1964 and the best-selling 22 rifle in the US. Millions have been sold, so I guess people like it.
    4. It is great fun to shoot. The "normal" versions are not exactly precision instruments, but lots of bullets down range in a short time can do certain jobs.

Shooting is a lot like sex. You have to experience it yourself to understand.

Treeman, what is ugly about a 10/22? Any rifle must have at least a bit of appeal.

I have one. Its light weight, very small dimensions, accuracy and reliability is what I liked when purchasing it.

I hate the way of the stock to barrel attachment and also that the stock must be removed to properly clean it.

For serious plinking it is a seriously enjoyable rifle to use. It is accurate as well.

That said, the Brno is not standing behind the 10/22 in the safe. When a .22 is needed for a job on the farm, I still take the Brno.

"Quantity has a quality all of its own".
