Ratting with home-made NV
We have a rat problem.
They eat the bird bells and I have just had to rewire my alarm system.
Out comes the NiteSite NV which has been in a box for years...charged the battery for hours until the green light came on, set it up as I did last time ... ... ... STONE DEAD! No wonder the company went bust. It's the biggest piece of shit ever created by man.
Anyway...
This is what I built using an old Sony camcorder and IR Crelant torch with a collimator from Torchguy.com - onto my Daystate Pulsar field target rifle.
I made a camera mount using an old Sportsmatch adjustable mount, a riser block and the most versatile material in the world... Frogzeggs https://www.frogzeggz.com/. It's a tough plastic you 'melt' in hot water, and then it sets hard. To re-use, simply heat with a hairdryer.

The shot was not too steady, as I was on a wobbly plastic table, aiming with one hand while holding the IR illuminator pressure switch in the other, and squinting at the tiny LED screen on the camera. Also... I forgot to cock the gun twice to activate the electronic trigger... 'rotkoors' is real. Shots were at 25m.

The first iteration was far too cumbersome and heavy, and the camera was set too far back, that I could not get into a comfortable shooting position, so I revised the setup with a small 4 X 44 scope. It works PERFECTLY. However, with the low mag, the precision required on live critters is not there. One needs a minimum of 10x mag to be confident of a first shot kill. Or I have to get closer.

Anyway... great experiment and awesome fun.
Edit: I also tried using the BSA ND3 green laser designator at first, but the marketing hype is stronger than the effectiveness of the product. Also a pile of crap... the green light spooks anything you shine it at! Don't believe the messaging!

Awesome!
Do you work the meat yourself or do you send it of to a butcher?
Sorry, couldn't resist.

Re: Ratting with home-made NV
There's a rat in me kitchen
When you out on the street,
You practice lies and deceit
And you scandalize my name
But when I catch you up
I'm gonna pull you up
I'm gonna check-out inside your brain
There's a rat in me kitchen what am I gonna do?
There's a rat in me kitchen what am I gonna go?
I'm gonna fix that rat that's what I'm gonna do,
I'm gonna fix that rat
