Is competency cert needed to buy the gun?
Hi guys
Recently started the process to buy a gun. I am aware its a shlep with training, then competency, then licensing, was just wondering if one has to wait for competency to be approved before buying the gun. Im also aware i need to wait for license approval before taking the gun home
So far i have done the proficiency training and also submitted competency request (last week)
So my question is can i buy now before actually receiving the competency approval?

Competency is not required to buy a firearm. Competency is a requirement for the license application. Some DFOs will let you apply for both the competency and new firearm licence at the same time, but not all of them as far as I know.

If you buy from a dealer with a range on site you can shoot it while waiting for your competency and licence.

Don't forget about storage fees! Depending on the shop you could end up paying quite a bit if you have to wait first for your competency and then licence. Most shops give you about a year free and then charge. Ask and find out.

Used to be R50/month but think it’s anywhere from R65-R100 these days.
