What paint to use on horns?
Hi Guys. My wife wants to paint some kudu horns white - any tips on what the best paint is to use and technique?

I love Hammerite. I would buy the White Gloss in it.
It sprays nice and covers brilliant. And is long lasting. Takes overnight to completely dry.
Ive used Rustoleum. It dries quicker. But to me its alot thinner coating and not same finish by far.

Thanks Shooty. No special prep required, just spray onto clean horns?

Re: What paint to use on horns?
Your best way would be to prime the horns with a multi surface primer.
When the primer coat has dried, sand lightly with a fine grit sandpaper or sanding sponge to flatten the hairs and other raised fibres as referred to above.
Spray the finishing coat, apply as 2 lightly sprayed coats for a smooth and run free finish.

I would sand them down, lightly, and then use a new wood primer before either painting or spraying. Make sure the primer is suitable for the paint you intend on using.

Re: What paint to use on horns?
I know you want them white so my reply doesn't really answer your question, but I've found that black shoe polish does a really good job of finishing & preserving horns. Seems to moisturise them slightly which helps with the preservation. When I first mount them I give them 4 or 5 coats applied with a toothbrush over a couple of days and thereafter every year or so I just give them a quick once-over with more shoe polish.
If I wanted them white or some other colour, my first try would be Hammerite, as already suggested.
