The original round nose was also around 227gr. The shape seems a bit off fromt he photo. "The M/88 cartridge was loaded with 2.75 g (42.4 gr) of single-base (based on nitrocellulose) smokeless powder and a relatively heavy, 14.7 grams (227 gr), round-nosed ball bullet with a diameter of 8.08 mm (0.318 in)'

2 bullets that I have seen with a double cannelure are the older .303 or the French 8x50 lebel. More likely a .303 in SA.
I don't recall seeing any 8mm mauser bullets having 2 cannelures.

Sounds like the old Mk I or Mk II .303Brit bullets then.

Not sure where Sterling is in Slum but there used to be a shooting range near the GP racing track in the South just behind the dunes . I watched Sterling Moss (origin of the name?) race there in late 50s or early 60s when I was a lighty.
