    No.

They change the balance of the rifle. Off hand shots at 100m+ are noticeably more difficult with unwieldy long rifles. If you go on a voorsit hunt or shoot off the bakkie, it doesn’t make a difference. If you walk and stalk over 20 odd kilometers a day or hunt in the thickets often requiring you to bend or kneel, a suppressor is an utterly kak thing to have on your rifle.

Also, I like hunting with special, often collectible rifles. There is no way I’m threading such a piece of equipment.

I have turned down two hunts this year because a suppressor was a requirement.

    I don't (yet)

As mentioned above by everyone that don't use them I do most of my hunting on foot I don't mind a "too heavy" rifle but I hate a out of balance rifle and so far 90% of the rifles I ever shot/carried/looked at were very out of balance for me to carry around all day. I will admit there are some suppressors that are more pleasant from a weight and length ratio.

Also I don't want to chop of the front sights of some of my rifles but for my Howa rifle this wont bother me getting a thread.

The farm we hunt on annually don't require us to have suppressors but the requirement does seem to become more and more of a thing and maybe in the future I might just go and get one or two rifles threaded and use them were I have to type thing.

If I had a dedicated bakkie/voorsit rifle then she would probably get a suppressor.

I do not hunt without one. Every one in our hunting group also eventually fitted one. I prefer walk and stalk. With regards to balance of the rifle, the better brands weigh a lot less, and don't have much of an impact in terms of length and weight. I went through three local ones before buying a better one.The first one was long and heavy and and pain in the thickets. The newer one I have not had any issues with. This of course makes no difference if shooting of a bakkie.

I don’t understand what the issue of hunting with a set of earplug in your pocket is? Walk and stalk in the bush is uncomfortable with a long rifle and decidedly more so with a long, unbalanced rifle. I wouldn’t thread my bushveld rifles but might consider doing it for a voorsit rifle.

I'm used to hunting with a silencer. Bought a new rifle specifically for walk&stalk. It's short, light and has a barrel band so carries very well and doesn't stick up any higher than my head. Ideal for thick bush.

First hunt, ear plugs in pocket with mental note to put them in before final bit of stalk. Needless to say, ear plugs never left my pocket. Excitement of stalk just too big!

Both my 308s are "traditional" wood&blued steel rifles, as close to how they left the factory in 1972 as possible... to put suppressors on them would completely destroy their originality. the BRNO is nice and light, with a barrel band so it's a perfect walk&stalk gun (even where I hunt in the Karoo!) while the Musgrave already has a 26" barrel so adding anything on that is just silly.

Conversely, when I bought my 223 I specifically bought the 20" barrel, so that I can add a (short) can without ending up with an ungainly long rifle. As it is currently, without a suppressor, the 223's bark is definitely sharper than either of the 308's, so the 223 really needs to be quietened down.

List each difference and then debate that point individually.

    1: Length
Does it add length, yes, does this matter in hunting, no, I’ve never seen a person carry a rifle sideways through the thickets, something I myself love to hunt in.
You maneuver it carefully through obstacles at a slow pace in any case to avoid noise.

2: Weight, does it add weight, definitely, carrying the rifle for long periods will most definitely affect most people. This is something that can be, and should not be an issue in a human, like any exercise we can condition ourselves to be able to carry stuff. If you complain about the weight, leave that off the forum, that is something personal to the individual.

3: Noise, does it reduce noise, definitely, probably the difference between having hearing damage as you get older vs no ringing sound in your ears. Can this be fixed by other equip, definitely with stuff like earplugs or electronic earplugs. I will however tell you despite technology, electronic earplugs are not perfect. When hunting the thickets you lose one sense, sight, I often rely HEAVILY on sound as it tells me how much noise I am making (the faintest sounds), and it gives me the position of the animal if it moves or feeds.

4: Recoil, does it reduce recoil, a lot, and one can argue in any direction having less recoil gives you the advantage of seeing shot impacts or deflections better.

5: Handling (balance), does it change how the rifle handles, yes, does this matter, for 99% of people not a chance. Sorry to say but 99% of people have no business of shooting offhand, so when they are shooting over sticks the added weight does only give a more steady rifle, nothing less. If you are a T-Stone and come out and tell me you prefer the balance without a silencer I give you that, how many of you are T-stone’s that hunt for a living, less than 1%. For the rest of us the shot would not be interfered or hampered by having a suppressor fitted, it would in fact only help you.

6: Looks, does it ruin old beautiful vintage rifles, yes, if that is something that bothers you by all means, but keep it out of these kind of debates, since it’s mere cosmetics, not a physical problem/reality like the other topics.

So in short, look at your hunting destination, the shot requirements, and then go look at the above criteria and decide according to Pro’s and Con’s what would be best for that hunt.

    Lots of truth there Messor.

I have been contemplating all this for quite a while. This is how I came to the conclusion that I need a 308 with 16" barrel and suppressor. The setup mitigates the length, balance and weight issues, but also sacrifices some MV and range. YMMV.

    What's a suppressor.
Speak up young man I can't hear you.
    WHAT?
    Scream in my ear hole.
    WHAT?
    WHAT?
It's a bummer when one can't read lips with the bloody covid masks.
Protect your ears guys. Once your hearing is gone it's permanent.
