Firearms ID and worth
Hi guys,
a good buddy of mine lost his father recently who had 3 firearms on his name. white license and not expired. They have booked it into a dealer.
Please can someone give me an estimated worth, looking to buy the lot from him and would obviously like to give him a fair price. He is in JHB and I am in WC so I cannot go view the firearms.
1) BSA LE .303
Cannot see the markings except a "U", my guess is a SMLE Mk III. Barrel condition is unknown but it is a family piece handed down, exterior looks good.
My guess is around +- R1500, dealer offers R500.
2) Colt 38spl
Friend has no idea, was a safe queen. Looks to be chrome plated. I cannot guess the value but dealer is offering R500.
Would the revolver be worth it to license?
3) Luger 9mm
Family piece as well, also no idea on worth but dealer is offering R700.
EDIT: Revolver seems to be a Colt Cobra.

Re: Firearms ID and worth
My guestimates for values would be (If I were to put them on Gunafrica):
LE: R3k
Colt: R4k
Luger: R4k
The dealer is a bit low imo, perhaps you could offer R2k a piece and still sleep soundly.
Edit: The Colt is certainly worth it, beautiful workmanship.

Re: Firearms ID and worth
Depending on the markings on that Luger and if it has matching serial numbers on all parts, could go quite a bit higher than R4k
The LE seems to be sporterised and not worth much to a collector.
Value on that Colt seems to be spot-on.
I think there's going to be quite a bit of interest from GS members to the Colt and the Luger if you want to sell it.

Re: Firearms ID and worth
I suggest the take those guns with the licenses to Classic Arms in Witbank, and let them go on auction.
You will get much more than what the dealers are offering, and you get your money within 2 weeks of the auction closing date.
It's the least hassle way of selling firearms without having to bend over for the dealers.
Just call them first and ask about the process if you are not the name on the licenses.

Re: Firearms ID and worth
The old Enfield looks pretty good, like a Lee Speed style. Worth looking into further.
Cobra if Alloy, Detetective Special if Steel. Cant tell from here.
The Luger looks to be an East German rebuild or "Vopo"

Then again , that sight is pure Military ugliness, so no.
Any marking on the Luger you can share?

Re: Firearms ID and worth
You have to check the barrel of the 303 before you buy and bare in mind that 303 ammo is very expensive, so are the components, if you want to load.
I've seen a beautiful 303, until we looked down the barrel. The older cordite ammunition was very corrosive and if the barrel was shot and not cleaned properly, it might be ugly down there and you have just thrown money away.

Re: Firearms ID and worth
Cordite ammo will erode the barrel irrespective of how good the barrel was cleaned.
