Religion and guns
I would like to ask all religious members of this forum, wether you are Evangelical, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist etc, to please share what your faith teaches on gun possession, self-defence, sport shooting etc and please share same with the rest of the forum. Let's build a database for our members to use, because I often hear arguments from clowns like GFSA and leftist clergy that it is immoral and un-Christian (or, Un-Jewish or Un-Muslim if you will) to own and use firearms, because "guns kill and thou shalt not kill", a narrative that needs to be challenged and defeated. We need to explain that firearm ownership is not only necessary from a practical perspective, but praiseworthy from a moral perspective.
For my contribution, here is a good defense of gun ownership from a Catholic perspective:

Re: Religion and guns
I am not even remotely religious, but for what its worth its my understanding that the proscription on killing in the 10 commandments is apparently a mistranslation. I understand that it ought to read: thou shalt not murder.
The distinction is significant.
It is also my understanding that Jesus instructed the apostles to acquire arms in Luke 22:36.
The Havamal (which is not a religious text) requires it.
A wayfarer should not walk unarmed,
But have his weapons to hand:
He knows not when he may need a spear,
Or what menace meet on the road.Cattle die, kindred die, every man is mortal:
But I know one thing that never dies,
the glory of the great dead.
Havamal

Re: Religion and guns
Mmmmmm I think it is better to stick to logic, and common sense. The argument for self defence is very sound. I see no need to bring religion into the debate.

Re: Religion and guns
Narrated Uqbah ibn Amir:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: Allah, Most High, will cause three persons to enter Paradise for one arrow: the maker when he has a good motive in making it, the one who shoots it, and the one who hands it; so shoot and ride, but your shooting is dearer to me than your riding. Everything with which a man amuses himself is vain except three (things): a man's training of his horse, his playing with his wife, and his shooting with his bow and arrow. If anyone abandons archery after becoming an adept through distaste for it, it is a blessing he has abandoned; or he said: for which he has been ungrateful.
Sunan Abi Dawud 2513
'Uqbah bin' Amir (RAA) narrated, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) recite when he was on the pulpit, “And make ready against them all you can of power, including steeds of war” (Quran 8:60), surely strength is in shooting; Surely strength is in shooting, surely strength is in shooting.'
Related by Muslim.
It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you think if a man comes wanting to take my property? He said: “Do not give him your property.” He said: What if he fights me? He said: “Fight him.” He said: What if he kills me? He said: “Then you will be a martyr.” He said: What if I kill him? He said: “He will be in Hell.” Narrated by Muslim (140).
It was narrated that Sa’eed ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The one who is killed defending his wealth is a martyr, the one who is killed defending his family is a martyr, the one who is killed defending his religion is a martyr, and the one who is killed defending his life is a martyr.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (1421), al-Nasaa’i (4095), Abu Dawood (4772)

Re: Religion and guns
The Dalai Lama said that if someone is trying to kill you, it is reasonable to shoot them with your own gun
Mahatma Gandhi said that one of the worst crimes the British committed was disarming the Indian population
I'm paraphrasing both cos I can't be assed to find the exact quotes right now

Obama:
So it's not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.
