Regarding the Cold Steel FGX Cat Tanto
I was wondering how efficient the slashing action of this blade is?
Thank you.

Re: Regarding the Cold Steel FGX Cat Tanto
Are you really hooked on the Tanto style blade? Why?

Re: Regarding the Cold Steel FGX Cat Tanto
Can I add to that? With respect, of course.......but are you really hooked on a plastic tanto style blade?
Cold Steel's tanto is what is referred to as an Americanised tanto (in other words, it is not a tanto that conforms to the original tanto shape .... in fact, the Cold Steel Outdoorsman more closely resembles an original tanto). The Americanised tanto is designed specifically around point strength for thrusting and puncturing.
If you want a good slashing blade then it is better to get something with a deeper belly. And I would not put money down on a nylon knife.....are your circumstances really so extreme that you need a knife that won't trigger a metal detector and can be buried in wet soil for long periods of time? If they are, then I apologise in advance. If not, then rather spend your money on a good quality steel blade.

OK. Forgive my ignorance but what exactly is the "style of the tanto" ? Also why do you need to defeat a metal detector so badly?

Re: Regarding the Cold Steel FGX Cat Tanto
Hi Tanto de Korosu
If you have been trained in the style of the tanto and your training is so specific as to rule out the use of anything but a tanto, then you will probably be looking for a traditional tanto, which has a more gradual curve to the point. In which case I would advocate against an Americanised tanto such as the Cold Steel. Not that the Americanised tanto isn't a great looking knife and has some very real uses. I used to carry the Cold Steel gunsite in a tanto shape for some time and it made for a great utility knife.
I have rather a lot of martial arts experience under my belt and I generally find that weapons styles are pretty adaptable. In other words - you can make them work for your knife of choice. Which is a virtue in my books. And if it comes to looking for an edged weapon rather than a tool (as in, 'to be used for self-defence') it is best to look to the styles of blades that men carried when their lives really depended on it.

Re: Regarding the Cold Steel FGX Cat Tanto
Hi guys, sorry for acting like an idiot/internet troll – it wasn’t my intention.
I wasn’t serious about needing a knife to pass a metal detector; I was merely interested in the discussion of the cat tanto. Regarding “the way of the Tanto”; I’m not going to explain for fear of being ridiculed further.
Please accept my apology and thank you for your advice and patience.
Take care,
T.
