Re: 40 SW becoming obsolete?
For the non-IPSC folks: 10mm/.40 is the minimum allowed calibre to make major (powerfactor of 170) in both Classic an Standard divisions. To make 170 PF in 9mm you would have to shoot a 124gr bullet at 1370 feet per second. Alternatively a 147gr bullet needs to move at 1157 fps to make 170 PF. The issue is doing it safely!

Re: 40 SW becoming obsolete?
Oafpatroll,
Most IPSC Standard shooters are using 2011- style guns (STI/PARA/Bul/SVI) in 40 in order to make Major Power factor which in IPSC is 170 . So to be safe a 180gr at 1000 or so fps.
However in a 2011 the OAL is usually around 31mm so essentially IPSC Standard shooters are using medium 10mm Auto rounds but using cheaper 40 S&W brass.
Also, in IPSC minimum bullet diameter allowed for Major is 10mm, which essentially entrenches the 10mm Auto /40 S&W case combination.

Re: 40 SW becoming obsolete?
With reference to MrK's post - at one stage IPSC Open class factor was 170 as well and most folks used 38 Super - Guns were incredibly loud and brass life was short. A few people started loading 9mmP for this in normal 9mmP guns and it soon became an issue because the CZ and Tanfoglio guns at that stage did not always cope well where as the 1911 based guns were OK as the 38 Super OAL was also 31mm+.
The rules were then changed : IPSC Open was limited to 121 gr bullets or heavier and minimum factor dropped to 160.

Re: 40 SW becoming obsolete?
Yeah, a while ago I tried three gun shops in my area and none had .40 SD ammo but components were all on the shelf..

Re: 40 SW becoming obsolete?
So he inquired about selling his G30 and was told 40S&W is dead? Did they wander off topic and that just came up?
