Lead bullets banned in the UK
Just received a notice on an airrifle group that lead bullets for hunting has been banned in the UK effective July 2022.
Lead target bullets banned effective 2025.
Any truth to this?

Re: Lead bullets banned in the UK
Lead is a bit of a bastard. I have no issues with banning the use of lead in agriculture or game reverse land. There are monolithics and what not. Maybe it's controversial, but the less heavy metal we spew, the better.
However, lead should still be allowed for self defense and range use. Range use, because it's a regulated and controlled space, environmental contamination is not a concern here. For self defense rounds, well, because self defense.... Enough said there.
I believe though the biggest risk to shooters though is the lead compound in primers. Especially in an indoor range with no active ventilation. Fmj, cmj or powder coated rounds in an indoor range doesn't produce any lead dust, but the primers do.
I know in some places, you are restricted to using 'safe' primers, which contain another compound that contains no lead.
I know of at least one indoor range that has started to recycle the lead in their backstop and they cast and sell powder coated bullets. That's responsible and I approve.

Re: Lead bullets banned in the UK
When I lived there in the eighties there was a lot of talk about banning lead sinkers for fishing. Swans were eating the lead when they were feeding off the bottom of rivers and lakes. Tungsten was suggested as an alternative.

Re: Lead bullets banned in the UK
This whole lead thing, I have looked into it umpteen times and I am leaning more to the believe that lead just lies there. It does not contaminate meat when used to hunt. If you swallow lead it will not harm you in its bullet, sinker form.
I am so interested in this subject, but every proof has a disproving later study and vice versa.

Re: Lead bullets banned in the UK
The ban in the UK has been coming for a long time and there's been engagement with the shooting federations on it for decades. Non-lead shot has been available there for a hell of a long time, maybe 20 years. I know two poms who have never put lead shot through their guns.

Re: Lead bullets banned in the UK
I used to walk with lead pellets under my tongue as a kid. Funny thing is I started thinking yesterday that it might be the reason I am so stupid. But I'm still alive so!
The pelletgun and .22 guys will not like this.

The EU gunbrabbers have done the same.
