    Default Removing carbon from barrel

    Morning all.

I'm sitting with a 2nd hand rifle that has its barrel baked with carbon. I've soaked it in the normal barrel cleaning oils and scrubbed it with a bronze brush until there is no more brush left. The carbon does not seem to come off. The patches come out black.

Any recommendations on first hand experience of a good carbon remover that I can soak the barrel in?

The best I have used is Boretech Carbon Remover Solvent.

Expensive, but it gets the carbon removed with the least amount of scrubbing.

What I have been reading it's either that or JB paste

I agree with the above. You say that you are using oil to remove carbon. A barrel cleaning solvent is your best bet

In addition to carbon solvents, most penetrating oils do an excellent job of loosening carbon deposits.

In stubborn cases I would use JB Bore Paste or Mr Muscle. (Mr Muscle is the old Brillo brass polish, sold at supermarkets. DO NOT USE BRASSO!)
This works especially well on the dreaded carbon ring that occasionally forms just in front of the chamber.

These take out copper fouling too, and the copper and carbon is sometimes mixed.

That being said, the best investment I made in cleaning equipment is a Teslong bore scope. Now I can actually see what I'm doing in there. It shows the copper and carbon deposits, along with all the other issues, very well.

    What about using brake cleaner?
The one in a spray can

What are you currently using to clean the barrel?

It works well to flush out the Carbon Solvent. On its own, not so effective.

Have a look at the CMH cleaning kits. Works very well.
