So 10mm is cheaper for range ammo

    For Carry ammo
    SIG V-Crown

    10mm R659
    40S&W R575

40S&W a little cheaper for carry ammo
    Very interesting

Used 10mm brass is often cheaper than used .40S&W brass.

    They are ..

I shot 40 out of my 10mm. The mag was loaded with 10mm but the 40 somehow got there. I would not draw a parallel with this and 38spl and 357mag as it is not.

If you reload the cost difference as explained in detail by other GS members here, are non issue.

My G20 has seen over 20K rounds and nothing was changed. I swapped the guide rod for a captured unit for ease of stripping not failure of the original.

The G20 is the very best example of a modern handgun.

An acquaintance bought himself a brand new G20 way back when these were still a novelty. Being the curious type, he also tried shooting 40S&W ammo through his pride and joy. All went well for a few shots until, after the 20th shot, the extractor broke. He got himself a new extractor 2 weeks later and the G20 was running again.

The reason for the failure is that the extractor was never intended to control the head space. When you try doing that, the extractor pulls the cartridge slightly skew as it pulls back on the rim and the striker slams it forward. So far so good. The the primer ignites the powder and the case expands to fill the chamber. This action happens under huge pressure, well over 30 000 PSI. The pressure and expansion aligns the case with the chamber and that puts an immense pulling force on the extractor, before the case is pushed back against the breech face. At some point the extractor must give. If you don't believe me, just do the test yourself...

There are at least 2 ways to safely shoot 40S&W in your G20 (or any other 10mm pistol).
    1. Buy a conversion barrel. These are readily available in the US. Not so easy in SA due to Act 60 of 2000.
    2. Use a chamber insert. A metal ring of the correct dimensions stuck in the chamber to allow the shorter case to head space properly is not too difficult to make. Just make sure it sits tight so it does not pop out all by itself.

Off course if you have a 10mm Auto revolver, your moon clips will properly head space the shorter cases

Early G20s extractor was the same as used in the the G17.

Lol, looks like one of the S&B suppliers in Gauteng read this thread and quickly changed their 10mm price to R570 per 50 from R490 without any change in stock levels this afternoon
Watching if the others follow suit

The bullet jump issue seems a neutral factor based on the same phenomenon present when shooting 38spl out of 357 magnum.
Not at all, head spacing on the case rim as in most revolvers and head spacing on the case mouth as in most semi auto's are 2 different concepts.
