Thread: 243 options

  1. #1

    Default 243 options

    Bergara B14 timber
    Tikka T3x hunter
    CZ557 sporter

For general varmint or small deer hunting. Anyone with experience on these 3?

CZ if you like the feel of Wood. Or Tikka.

Both those great options. The Tikka has same trigger as Sako 85, Which is an incredible factory trigger.
Adjustable 2 to 4 pounds. And if you replace the spring in trigger. You can go 1 pound to 2 pounds on the trigger.
Replacing spring is easy as can be and super cheap.

Just be mind full of 243's and their short barrel life.

    Side note.
Mate just got his Howa 243 with a wooden stock and Warrior suppressor.
Two brands I have looked at but never really considered.

Shot it at the range on Sunday and was very impressed. Lots of bang for his buck and a really nice combination.

Okay. I was set on the Tikka but the plastic trigger guard put me off. Personal choice thing. If you can get past that it’s a great gun by all accounts.

The Bergara was okay, seemed like a decent option.

I settled on the Sauer S100 timber. Maybe add it to your fondling list, I’m not sure about pricing in Ireland but it should be in the same ballpark as the others.

Then, don’t discount the Howa either. They are shooters.

By all accounts, 6mm calibre cartridges are popular in the UK and Ireland. The 243 being the favorite by quite a margin.

All three of your named choices will work.
You may want to look at getting a synthetic stocked version though. The weather in hunting season is not your friend. It can be very cold and very wet. A wooden stock will take a beating.

Also consider that your scope choice is probably more important than the rifle. I expect the hunting laws to be similar on the continent. You will be required to make judgement calls on sex, age, development of horns etc. And you may have to do that in low light conditions. The light gathering capability and image quality of the glass is far more important here than what it is in sunny South Africa.

I think the only advice I can give is to go look and physically pick up all of your options. I was set on buying either the Tikka or a Lithgow LA102. And then after picking them up, shouldering them, etc, I just didn’t feel it. The Sauer had a longer LOP that suited me better. It was one of those “love at first sight” things, even though it wasn’t even on my list.
If you’re buying purely on facts, there’s very little argument against the Howa. If you throw in a little sentiment or emotion into it, then the choice is yours alone. From the options you’ve mentioned there’s really nothing negative to say about any of them.
