Default Why Some Americans Cling to Their Guns

An interesting essay. It's from an American perspective, but the same principles could readily apply in South Africa. In short, the people who support and oppose gun bans have radically different outlooks on life, and it's not simply a matter of crime or violence, but respect for the rights and the opinions of those who differ from you.

Had a long debate with someone once, and in the very end it came down to the fact that he was too afraid to have and own a firearm himself, and so he projected that onto the rest of society.

I asked him but do you belong to a security company; so then what is the difference between the armed guy that arrives from ADT and the average citizen gun owner. Training. And that is easy to get.

So that matches with what you said. Respecting the rights of others, in this case to protect themselves.

The prevailing attitude here in NZ is one of constant denigration of America and their "obsession" with firearms. It's quite tiresome and demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of the depth and complexity of American history. In tandem also demonstrating a lack of understanding of their own history and how the US saved their asses during WW II.

Speaking generally of course, but the thought of ever having to defend themselves at all if the balloon went up, just doesn't exist.

The only reason someone wants to disarm you is that they want to do something to you that you would shoot them for.

The left in America wants absolute control over everyone's lives and take from you what they want.

This will not continue for very much longer. Eventually, something is going to break.

No, it won’t. We’ve been bred into civilised behaviour.
Look how Zim tanked. Look at SA’s government looting and pillaging the state coffers with no civilian uprising to restore order and proper government.

The mere fact that the lawful gun-owner is also the most law-abiding is a telling factor.

You may be right. I hope it is resolved politically and not in a partisan war. But with 1 party raging and calling 1/2 of Americans domestic terrorist; even our president said that. Doesn't look like a political solution will be forth coming.

It's part of the multi-generational peace dividend and it's resulted in a decadent and emasculated population in the west. There are consequences for having a population of men who are inoffensive and harmless.

To invert Obama's infamous quote, people cling to their guns and religion because these things tend to help in bad times (as well as good). The people who disagree are typically radical statists who demand the government give them everything they want and control everything.
