The linked daisy chain served a few purposes, it could be removed for friendly traffic, deployed quickly by pulling it across the road in an emergency.
And most importantly not be left behind to be used by enemy forces against you later.

The system the military use was in a storage box with a long rope. The stinger remain in the box and only get pulled when needed like in this video.

The version I recall we used had a detachable hollow spike. We used them at roadblocks around Zeerust. Pulled open with a rope, but I can’t remember how it packed away.
It’s an excellent way of closing a road.

The caltrop is an ancient invention and was used extensively by the Romans amongst others. The one in the picture above was an enhanced design for use against pneumatic tyres and was air dropped by the million into occupied Europe to disrupt road traffic
