Do you have a source for that perhaps? I only see this tweet https://twitter.com/hxhassan/status/...611492865?s=20 being referenced

Then news sources reporting on the rumor of his death. No claim from the USA of it

I don’t understand these world affairs, but when you look at the scenario from a neutral standpoint it’s kinda crazy. Your military does a covert operation where it bombs somebody in their own country with your special super hellfire drone thingy, and then you immediately plast it all over the news to show how great you are.

Why's it so complicated? These terrorists haven't survived this long by being stupid. The USA/West has lost its appetite for a body-count incurred chasing these guys. High-tech is cheaper than negative press and casualties. The challenge is tracking Al-Qaeda down - so the last thing you do is advertise where you're looking, what you're using etc (not very different from hunting a shy animal). In the process of hunting them, there are a few near misses and oopses (which you work hard to keep quiet - this is politics remember)

And occasionally you get lucky and take out an infamous bad guy. Celebrate success - this is politics, remember! The current narrative requires a demonstration of US technical superiority (which is monstrously expensive) to try and discourage the proliferation and growth of terrorist factions. How logical or successful that approach is you can decide for yourself.

The US govt also needs to show some value for money wrt to its military spend, especially the cost of high tech munitions.
In fairness, it think we can safely assume that there's other 'wet work' going on behind the scenes that's taking out various terrorist kingpins that we never hear about. Either the methods used wouldn't find public acceptance or the individuals being removed are not household names and thus aren't newsworthy.
