    Question Scopes and recoil

I'm a sucker for recoil. It's like therapy for me. I own quite a few bruisers, because it is important for my health. So I'm familiar with recoil and a lot of it.

It however baffles me when I'm told that although my scopes can withstand the recoil of my 416 Rigby, it will not last two shots in a spring type airgun. Reverse recoil or something like that.

It does not compute for me. What difference does it make in what direction the recoil is?

    Can someone please enlighten me?

PS: Not talking about focus etc. Just recoil.

Im no fundi but I think the vibration of the spring in all directions ruins the scopes that are built for recoil in one plane only. The air-gun rated scopes seem to have re-inforced reticles that can handle this vibration effect.

G-force, thanks for the reply. Although the same is said by the sales persons, I fail to to find literature that confirms this.

Both rifles, may it be air driven or driven through burning of gun powder, causes a opposite reaction - recoil. In my mind, the greater the recoil, the greater the forces that impact the scope and mountings. I'm not too sure about the spring causing vibrations on another plane while recoiling.
