Default .177 caliber Gamo 1250 velocity

I chronoed my Gamo 1250 this past weekend and I am consistently getting between 820-850 FPS with 7.9 grain Gamo Pro Magnums and an average of 700 FPS with 10.5 grain Crosman Premiers.

With the Gamo's published velocities of 1600 FPS I was expecting this air rifle to do at least 950-1100 FPS with normal weight pellets. I learnt somewhere that some 1250s came with a 1000 FPS rated spring.

Are these velocities I am getting normal or have I got a defective Gamo 1250?

Please share your experiences with this air rifle.

Best ask one of the guys on airrifle.co.za. The gamo's are normally overrated on their velocities and require lightweight pellets to achieve them. Normally anyway speeds over 1000fps lead to accuracy issues.

    Thanks Richardtl

I am seeing/hearing no physical signs to suggest that this gamo is defective other than the low velocities I am getting compared to the manufacture's rating. It shoots very accurately with CP 10.5 grains and currently a 12 FPE gun. I think this power is plently for what I am using the gun for. If indeed everything is OK with this gun it can only be that Gamo overrated it in the first place.

Richard is correct. It is more an advertising gimmick. Those velocities can be achieved with spring gun maybe...if you use a 5gr pellet.Using any grain pellet over 1000fps(normally in a PCP airgun) only leads to inconsistent accuracy.Witha springer try get a consistant 800fps with an 8,5gr jsb or AA Diabolo pellet. Then your gun will group the best.Another thing with these so called high velocity spring airguns is that they kill scopes on a daily basis.Rather look at a Weirauch or Air Arms make.Vincent aka Mze on the forum will tune your Gamo better than anyone can and offer you expert advice.Look him up it is worth it.

I have amongst my airrifles two Hatsans. One a 1000fps one and the other 1250 fps. These are both near to their advertised speeds. The 1250fps cannot hit a barn wall but is fun to shoot because of the speed, but otherwise is no good. Both are classed as scope killers.

Both are fitted with single mount Nikko Sterling Airkings.

You do not need that speed in an air gun, over penetration in PC, 800-900 fps is perfect in .177.

Hey, you have a Gamo (Spain) 1250, not the British made one. Hence the velocities. They cannot export them at that speed (?) but you can fix it quite easily. Get the correct spring and then get decent scope/mounts (cos at that power it WILL break optics) and then get it properly fitted, either by Vincent or Kevin.
