Strange Steenbok Behavior.
Early this morning I spotted two steenbok that seemed to be mating. One was attempting to mount the other but was quite violently rebuffed.
Closer investigation showed that both were females and that the one was violently opposed to this. I'm not sure if this is territorial behavior or something else.

Strange stuff. The one who I assume was doing the rebutting looks more than a bit put out in the first pic.

Re: Strange Steenbok Behavior.
Cows indicate reproductive receptivity by homosexual mounting, where the cow exhibiting the standing reflex is receptive, not necessarily the mounting cow. Mounting cows, although not necessarily receptive, are usually approaching receptivity so their activity indicates they may benefit from the presence of a bull.

Re: Strange Steenbok Behavior.
This is true but cows (domestic cows) are herd animals, steenbok are mostly solitary except when they are mating or, in the case of females, have offspring with them. There will normally be a male and a female in fairly close proximity but they are not together. I have never seen two females together, except where an ewe has a female lamb. In this case the one ewe is smaller than the other but too large to be a dependent lamb.

According to some sources, steenbok (also known as steenbuck or steinbok) are generally solitary animals that only come together to mate12. However, it is suggested that pairs occupy consistent territories while living independently and stay in contact through scent markings2. This way they know where their mate is most of the time2.
There is no evidence of homosexual behaviour among female steenbok in the literature. However, homosexual behaviour has been observed in other antelope species, such as impala, oribi, and springbok34. Homosexual behaviour in animals may have various evolutionary, social, and ecological functions, such as bonding, dominance, reproduction, and adaptation4.
I hope this answers your question. If you want to learn more about steenbok or other animals, you can ask me follow-up questions or search on Bing.
