What is the current situation with rebarreling hunting rifles?
Hi
I know that a while ago, the licensing aspects related to rebarreling hunting rifles made this an option that just was not worth taking on. Does anyone know if this is still the case?
My 270Win is now at a point where seating bullets anywhere close to the lands is becoming a serious challenge, and I am limited to rather heavy-ish monometal bullets.......and then there is the limitation imposed by the mag well length, and also a rifling twist rate that is less well suited to super long bullets.
I love the rifle and it is an action worth keeping (SAKO L691, if I am not mistaken).

Not to take away from your need to replace the barrel, but there are plenty instances that prove that you do not have to kiss the lands for precision.
Maybe just check with your favourite bullets what the accuracy is when loaded to your original accurate load. May give you enough service until you can get the barrel changed.

Is getting the barrel set back a bit re-chambered an option?

Re: What is the current situation with rebarreling hunting rifles?
I have done this with a few shot out barrels and, in every case, I got a few hundred more accurate shots from the barrel. The length of the barrel's knox form will determine how many times, if at all, this can be done.
I would not do this, or re-barrel, until accuracy became unacceptable.Last edited by TStone; 13-08-2024 at 08:41.

I had a .308 that shot sub-MOA 5-shot groups with 11mm of bullet jump.
As others have said, see what it does with some of your older loads.

Maybe we could answer his original question, cause I'm curious too. There's a Brno 243 that's shot out that I'd love to rebarrel into a creedmoor

I stand to correction, but way to do it is to buy and license the barrel you want, then get it fitted, and when you are required to show your license or renew it, you show or renew both cards. Not sure what you do with the old barrel? Hand it in I presume?

Would you not get issued a new card for the firearm with updated serial numbers as the current cards make provision for barrel, frame, receiver, etc.
I say the above whilst fully cognizant of the fact that CFR and SAPS walk to the beat of their own drum and being issued a separate card for your barrel is well within the realms of possibility.

Re: What is the current situation with rebarreling hunting rifles?
Thank you, very much for your input, guys.
Has anyone had a rifle rebarrelled, recently.
aofpatrol's and TStone's suggestion is a good one: I will ask Petrus Jonker whether we have enough space on the knoxform to accom a further couple of full circle thread cuts.
Thanks again, guys
