I think it far more likely that they excused his behaviour, justified it and pretended that it wasn't an issue hiding it under some BS pseudoscience term like 'neurodiversity' for fear of breaching political correctness norms.

Kid was apparently investigated before for discord posts, dad was told to keep firearms secured.
Dad gave the kid the rifle after that as a gift.

The parents of a Michigan teenager who shot dead four students have each been sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison.
A seven-year sentence was recommended, but prosecutors asked for more.

James and Jennifer Crumbley, the first parents of a US school shooter to be convicted, appeared together for the first time in months at Tuesday's sentencing hearing.

Both expressed regret about their son's attack, as their lawyers pushed to minimise their prison sentence.

This was a previous case not to long ago.

I remember that case. I remember the video of the mother while she was booked, who was more interested in her phone than the actual charges she was facing.
