Legally correct way to get rid of surplus (bulk) ammo
Good day all.
I'm going to sell a firearm, but need to get rid of the bulk ammo I have for the said firearm first, otherwise I'll be in possession of ammo without a licence, if the firearm being sold license is canceled from my name. Can a gunshop "buy" the ammo back for a "credit" on another firearm purchase? Any advise of how to do this legally will be appreciated. Thanks.

You can sell the firearm with the ammunition.
Assuming you would inflate the price of the firearm (and the ammo will be included in the firearm sale)
Don’t think you allowed to sell the ammunition separately.
That’s from my understanding. Correct me if I’m wrong

In order to sell ammo you need to be a dealer. Having said that you can sell a cardboard box for R750 and include the ammo for free with it.
Play it safe and book the ammo in with a mate who has the correct license or a lgs you trust so they can store or sell it on your behalf.

It might be worth it to put up for auction at Classic Arms in their next firearm auction.

Give the ammo as part of gun sale = the easiest. Otherwise you can drop it off with SAPS but no idea where that will end up...

By "bulk ammo", do you mean more than 200 rounds, and thus whoever buys the gun may not be able to take it all as he may not have dedicated status?

Re: Legally correct way to get rid of surplus (bulk) ammo
A few things to take note according to the FCA.
1 Definitions
'dealer' means any person who is licensed in terms of this Act to trade in firearms and ammunition;
CHAPTER 7 LICENCES ISSUED TO PARTICULAR CATEGORIES OF PERSONS - DEALERS, MANUFACTURERS AND GUNSMITHS (ss 31-58)
31 (1) No person may trade in any firearm or ammunition without a dealer's licence.
31 (2) Subject to subsection (3), a person who is not a dealer may dispose of a firearm or ammunition only through a dealer or as otherwise provided for in this Act.
31 (3) A person who wishes to sell or donate a firearm (Note ammo not mentioned) to a willing buyer or donee, as the case may be,
Talk to your DFO about "selling" your ammo and FA separate. You will hear a lot of different stories. Now ask yourself what is the difference between Sell and Trade. (we all know what is the basic definition). I guess the only one who can give you a proper answer is the FA Registrar.
