Re: Legally correct way to get rid of surplus (bulk) ammo
In that case I would say you have two legal options. If the arm is bought by somebody with dedicated status and he is licensing it for dedicated activities (IE under a suitable section), then the ammo can go with the arm. Otherwise, you will need to sell or give it to a dealer?
I suppose one could either give it to the cops or dismantle and sell the bullets and cases separately, but neither of these seems like a good option.

As a matter of interest, what caliber is the ammo?

Re: Legally correct way to get rid of surplus (bulk) ammo
I also want the know the ammo caliber.
I still have a problem with the section that says you're not allowed to trade in ammo being applied to a private individual. If we take that word "trade" to mean simply "sell it privately" (which it does not, in my humble opinion), then we're not allowed to sell firearm privately either (since the act also calls that "trading"). But that's not the point of this thread.
I'd just gift the ammo to someone who can use it. Hell, I'd take it if I have a license that can use it.

Re: Legally correct way to get rid of surplus (bulk) ammo
RTFM
Chapter 7: 31 (3) A person who wishes to sell or donate a firearm (Note ammo not mentioned) to a willing buyer or donee,
The Act do make provision for private selling FA's. But alas, I do agree with you. A once sale in my eyes is not trading. But my opinion and non legal advice do not count. LOL.
