    Yes.

31 (1) No person may trade in any firearm or ammunition without a dealer's licence.

Talk to your DFO about "selling" your ammo and FA separate. You will hear a lot of different stories. Now ask yourself what is the difference between Sell and Trade. (we all know what is the basic definition). I guess the only one who can give you a proper answer is the FA Registrar.
Given my situation, it would be a once off sell and to an existing license holder of said calibre, as well as proof of dedicated status...
Surely "Trading" would be buying and selling on an ongoing basis, then being classified as a dealer....???

I see you are in the Vaal Triangle. Google F&J Shooting and speak to Juanita.

In that case I would say you have two legal options. If the arm is bought by somebody with dedicated status and he is licensing it for dedicated activities (IE under a suitable section), then the ammo can go with the arm. Otherwise, you will need to sell or give it to a dealer?
I suppose one could either give it to the cops or dismantle and sell the bullets and cases separately, but neither of these seems like a good option.

As a matter of interest, what caliber is the ammo?

I also want the know the ammo caliber.

I still have a problem with the section that says you're not allowed to trade in ammo being applied to a private individual. If we take that word "trade" to mean simply "sell it privately" (which it does not, in my humble opinion), then we're not allowed to sell firearm privately either (since the act also calls that "trading"). But that's not the point of this thread.

I'd just gift the ammo to someone who can use it. Hell, I'd take it if I have a license that can use it.

If you were 'giving' it to someone with dedicated status then I don't think the intended licensing section of the gun would come into it. Dedicated status is what allows you to build ammunition caches as I understand it.

The Act do make provision for private selling FA's. But alas, I do agree with you. A once sale in my eyes is not trading. But my opinion and non legal advice do not count. LOL.
