Something like steel or Alu can not and will dent and transfer the shock into something else like the screen or internal board.Luckily our range rents the Garmin out at R150 per hour. And the older LabRadar at R100. So i have no need to ever worry which one to use or to fork out +10k.
Nobody I know plans to throw their expensive equipment around, yet things still fall and break. I have seen a few chronys blown over by the wind. I have seen rifles fall off their rests. So, buying equipment that can survive the occasional fall is a good thing in my mind.

MMMM just reading part of the post. A harder outside will casue a fall to vibrate the impact into the internals and damage them easier then a forgiving material.

And a soft or flimsy case may break. There's no absolutes with failure modes for an assembly like a chrony so you can't state with any certainty that thinner, lighter, more ductile or whatever other property of the case will prevent the internals getting buggered in the case of a fall.

I don't have a dog in the Labradar fight - but I moved from a Pro Chrono to the Garmin, and I am beyond happy.

Garmin is functional, easy to set up and use. I get the info from it effortlessly. Fits in my range bag with the same footprint as a timer (!!).
Charges with a USB C charger, already a major win. Bought myself a protective case off of Safari & Outdoor app - and now I'm set.
Works on anything from air rifle to bow, handgun, rifle and black powder - I think I had 2 shots not read because I didn't angle it properly (user induced error).

For me it came down to price - the Garmin was on special at S&O, and I dropped the cash.
