Muzzle Breaks... school me.
Good evening,
Please school me on muzzle breaks on the AK platform.
My AK has the 45-degee break on. I'm not a fan.
What is available in SA?
Thank you.

You're not a fan of brakes or just the slanted brake?

Re: Muzzle Breaks... school me.
I had muzzle brake/comp/compensator or what ever you want to call it, built for my Mini14. It was a piece of bright steel with three 12mm holes drilled horisontally straight through and one pilot hole 90deg to the top in the first 12mm hole.
The pilot hole was started small and drilled bigger and bigger till there was very little muzzle rise.
My first prototype was with another three 12mm holes to he top, haha if the shot goes off the gun gets blown down and you had to fight the gun upwards back on target.
A comp blows the muzzle blast in a direction you want it to reduce muzzle rise and recoil.
And to piss off other shooters and kill the RO's hearing.
On guns with heavy recoil, the designers angle the ports a couple degrees backwards to reduce the recoil but I don't think it is necessary on a 223 or a 762×39.
Otherwise have a look at Lycan Kinetic Engineering's Silent Wolf sound moderator. You buy a muzzle brake for your gun and then the moderator quick attach on it.

Re: Muzzle Breaks... school me.
I am not going to lie to you. I am VERY new to the AK platform. Only shot just shy of 1000 rounds through mine.
I just don't like the way the recoil "pushes" with this device. Thus I am asking some pointers from the guys in the know. YouTube and Google for that matter is pointless, cause 99% of the stuff they talk about is not available in SA, so I want advise on what I can get in SA.

Re: Muzzle Breaks... school me.
Now that you know about brakes and breaks:
The so-called slant brake is really more compensator than brake.
In other words, it's purpose is to reduce muzzle rise rather than recoil.
There are almost as many different and conflicting theories and beliefs about muzzle brakes as there are about rifle accuracy (and the one often features in discussions about the other) but basically you need to look at how much of the gas is directed in what direction.
Direct it upwards and it reduces muzzle rise.
Direct it backwards and it reduces recoil and increases muzzle blast for the shooter and those standing next to him on the firing line.
Direct some of it downwards and it raises a cloud of dust when you shoot prone.
Port design definitely plays a role and anybody designing his brakes with the aid of CFD probably has a lead on those not using it, but just having more and bigger ports can compensate.
