Almost arrested this morning
Hi All
I was almost arrested this morning on Jan Smuts in JHB.
The Metro cops had 44 officers at Dunkeld centre pulling off motorists for traffic offences. In particular shortcutting the turning lane.
I got off because they were too disorganised to remember if I was guilty or not (and I wasnt), but my girlfriend was "arrested" along with approximately 50 other people.
They have taken them to Rosebank police station and are trying to arrest them properly.
This seems a little ridiculous for driving over a white line, yes sure most are guilty and should get a fine, but arresting everyone? Seems a bit much.
Does this seem reasonable to anyone?
Is there anything I can do to help my girlfirend get out quicker and easier?
Apparently a bunch of lawyers there already trying to help.
If they are arrested will they get a criminal record?
Your comments?

WoW, 99% of traffic offenses here are civil infractions that involve a citation with the worst case scenario being a fine

Wow thanks guys!
Yes I agree it was wrong, my question being does it deserve an arrest?
I wont even go there regarding the fact that 0 taxi's were pulled over!

Re: Almost arrested this morning
What are they arresting them for? The usual story is reckless and negligent driving.
There is not much you can do to get them through the process quicker, other than trying to get the docket allocated to a detective and to get them to do an address verification as quickly as possible so that they can be given police bail.
They will probably have to appear tomorrow. The control prosecutor, depending on the facts, probably won't enroll the case.
Playing the "taxi drivers didn't get arrested card" is going to get you nowhere.Cattle die, kindred die, every man is mortal:

Re: Almost arrested this morning
Perhaps that point system should come in too effect sooner than later. Then people will perhaps learn to drive better and avoid arrests. And yeah, I think an arrest is extreme.
It is shocking how bad the drivers are on our roads. I have seen a traffic cop pull over a car once in my life for a traffic violation, so they are ineffective.
Hope you get your girlfriend out of there soon. I would speak to a lawyer

Re: Almost arrested this morning
Thanks SSP.
No I never played the taxi card, I was very calm, polite and acted dumb!
All that they could tell me was that it was for driving over the white line, they didnt seem to know much more than that.
Not much more detail, am waiting to find out more when it happens.
apparently they will be asked to pay an admission of guilt fine of a R1000 at the station, but that is yet to happen.
For the record I have no problem with the cops doing their job and the fact that it was an offence, I just ask for competence and fairness from the cops. So far im yet to see that. They cant explain why people were being arrested or what the process even was from being pulled over.

Wot SSP sed.
Rec&neg is a 'sleeper' charge. You think it's just a minor infringement (to cross a lane, etc) but the rec&neg card trumps just about anything.
