Re: Mossberg 930 design flaw?
I don't know the weapon or what the pin does really, so it's hard to say. It gets stronger when hardened, but obviously less shock-resistant, but even when hard it is more shock-resitant than HSS (which is what good drill bits are made from).
Not sure if you know where to get it? Easiest is probably your closest piano tuner/repair shop. They call it Music Wire.

Re: Mossberg 930 design flaw?
Thanks, will give that a try. I have a few bits of music wire from when I tried my hand at spring making but they are much thinner diameters. Will hit up Weblor in Edenvale for some bits in the 1.6mm range. I've also been advised to try some stainless dowel pin stock.

Re: Mossberg 930 design flaw?
If I have to replace pins I love to use Allencap bolts (8.8 hardness) with the correct size shaft (if I can find it).
For a very hard pin you can try your local bearing supplier and ask for needle roller bearing pins, you can get them loose.
But from the other side: you say the pin broke when the spring wasn't in place, what about a new/stronger spring?
Does the spring provide cushioning and maybe it became weak through the years?
Or what about a type of recoil buffer as used in some handgun?

Re: Mossberg 930 design flaw?
I've done the same and they work great. Someone here once sent me pics of slide stops for CZ75s that he made from allen cap screws and I made one as a 3rd backup and it worked perfectly. In this case the diameter is a bit small for me to find.
That's a cool tip, had no idea you could get them loose. Have filed that away for future reference.
Seems plausible to me. The assembly is hinged on a thicker pin that is secured through the rear shell stop plate to the receiver. The front shell stop hinges on the rear one on the much thinner pin which is the problem child. With the rear stop spring absent I'm thinking the front one may be able to articulate too far too fast and then cam on the corner against the rear stop exerting excessive force on the small pin. Have ordered a couple of springs and will compare the old ones to the new before I replace it.
I don't think this is a recoil induced problem or at least not one that would be alleviated by buffering the bolt. I'm waiting on the decapping pins suggested by Peter Vee which are sized for a nice snug sliding fit in both parts and along with the replacement of the big spring I'm holding thumbs that I'll be done. If not I'll look into reaming the holes out half a mm or so and putting in an oversized pin.

Have you tried using a roll pin?
