    Default Black Wildbeest.

A young black wildebeest (white tailed gnu) bull. For me, this is one of the most difficult antelope to photograph. They are very skittish and rarely remain still for any amount of time. The fact that they favor wide open plains, make them difficult to get close to.

He looks twitchy just standing still. I remember someone describing them as looking like they were designed my a committee.

As a trophy animal, it is a bit of a conundrum. The younger (3-4 year old) bulls have the longest horns, great if you want to make the trophy books, but the really old bulls have a lot more character with huge, worn bosses, but broomed off horns.

Yup, I have a set where the bosses almost touch. They look "nicer" than just pure length.

I agree. The other weird thing about them, the meat is excellent. You would think that an animal as hyperactive as black wildebeest, would be too tough to eat, not so. But then, that is also true of springbok,
