    Default Firearm insurance

    Morning all

Looking at insuring some of my rifles, as i have one or two that are now in the *i cant afford to easily replace them* bracket.

Insurance will be for the usual theft/fire/etc vibes.

Any recommendations? Google brings up riflesure, but never heard of them. Anyone with the more commercial Outsurance/Doscovery/Santam?

I insured my firearms through Old Mutual. I just has to specify them under my policy. I've also included rifle scopes and red dots. The premiums aren't that bad either.

They don't cover a ka boom.

Your standard household contents policy covers the firearms while they are in the house against things like fire and theft. Some policies have extensions to cover household goods and personal effects (firearms would be personal effects) whilst temporarily removed from the house, but usually still in a building.
To cover firearms whilst they are away / outside your home (while in the bush hunting, at shooting range or travelling) you would need to specify them under the All Risks section. Very important to list full and current replacement cost. All insurers offer All Risks cover. Premium rate is higher than household contents cover.

I am insured with Riflesure. A mate of mine too and he's claimed successfully before from them, so they are legit.

The rates I got for gear, gadgets and guns were so high that I elected to leave the guns unspecified on household. I rarely have more than two of them with me at a time when I out and about and will rather take the hit on them than bleed premium indefinitely. Another thing to note is that if you use the guns for business your should disclose that as it would be a rating factor and could therefore result in a repudiation of a claim if you didn't.

I recently went through this with my now ex-insurer

They claimed that they *had* to put my pew pews down as "All Risk"
The quote was R12k a month more than I currently pay, 4x what I was paying on my house, 2 cars and all risk items.
They refused to budge, so I spoke to another broker
    He offered the following:

All pews covered under house holders, then a travel "all risk" that covers whatever I leave the house with.
Ended up costing me R300 a month more, and I have more cover.

Lemme know if you want my brokers details?

I’m in the long term insurance space but deal a lot with Shortterm insurance. As mentioned before, household cover will cover them at home. The best is having them under all risk (most cost effective) when you leave the house. it’s typically works that you have cover to the max value of your all risk cover amount, no matter the quantity of items claiming for. Companies like MUA and Echelon are really good when it comes to all risk cover. Again I’m in the long term space, this is based on my experience. Always best to speak to a qualified short term broker
