That's a classic story about the towel in the pants!
I must say I'm a huge fan of capsticks writing but there's plenty stories that seem pretty far fetched!

In most cases a helmet of sorts will interfere with you mounting the rifle or shotgun as it will not allow you to rest your cheek in the normal position making it virtually impossible to get off an effective shot - try it out before you put it into practice on the real deal. It will also interfere with your hearing. Kitted out like Mr. Capstick mentions is not sensible at all and it will in all probability result in the leopard getting to you anyway ..... without you even getting a shot off.

I had an occasion where we did the final approach on a big male leopard bayed up by my hounds with a German client. Before commiting ourselves into the danger zone I called the client closer for final instructions. At this point I noticed he had a huge beach towel wrapped around his neck. He'd stowed it away in his backpack. I took the time to ask him to mount his rifle quickly as if aligning it for a shot - he could not !! Off came the towel and shortly hereafter the leopard put in a full on determined charge which the client was able to stop on his own with his double .375 Mag. Goodness knows where his shots may have ended up if he managed to fire any at all with his protection around his neck. After the dust settled he turned his back on us and undid his trousers - I thought the worst had happened under the strain of the moment.Luckily not , he had an equally large towel shoved down the front of his pants !! He'd promissed his girl friend he'd take good care of himself for her.

Outside the box thinking here, i understand the rifle and shotgun argument. But can a case be made here for large calibre handguns like that S&W .500 magnum that yanks shoot bears with in alaska? Just a thought, if you consider the range at which this particular encounter took place...

On a side note, "scull"? Doesnt the Beeld newspaper have spell check on their computers?
Really Beeld stop making the rest of the world think we're illiterate.

I would prefer the bigger round in this case... But thats just me. But in handguns it would probably boil down to controllabilty vs stopping power.

BTW. I think Capstick must have been related to Baron von Munchausen.

On the shotgun vs the big bore. My opinion is that the problem with shotties on follow ups is range. You must be prepared to be very close for the weapon to have any effectiveness. People get into trouble because they take shots at to great a distance with a 12g and the shot has no stopping power. The big bore would be the best option. However with an angry Leopard on top of you I'm sure a shotgun would have some penetration... even with number sevens. But I'm sure one doesn't plan for that.

Not that I'm a tome of experience...but generally a wounded leopard's charge is rom very close range (no distance issue for shottie).

I read a book by a Zim PH who specialises in hunting leopards (can't remember name of book or author, will ask my father). They follow up with 460 Weatherby, but also any handguns they have are carried on the hip.
