Re: Strange experiance buying ammo
Yes. My revolver shows 38spl/357mag under the caliber.
If the DFO has an issue, then get a gunsmith report from a gunshop.
The other side of the coin is this. If you have 38spl ammunition, but your license card only says 357 magnum. Unless, a SAPS member knows whats going on, you will be in a world of hurt if you get stopped at a road block, because you now have unlicensed ammunition.

Re: Strange experiance buying ammo
I would have quoted him section 90 of the FCA of 2000
Prohibition of possession of ammunition
90. No person may possess any ammunition unless he or she—
(a) holds a licence in respect of a firearm capable of discharging that ammunition;
If your licensed firearm can safely discharge that ammo, then you may possess that ammo.

Being a retail sales assistant isn't lucrative or particularly aspirational. I think it's unrealistic to expect more than a handful of such employees in gun shops to be doing anything much more than marking time waiting for a better opportunity.

Re: Strange experiance buying ammo
There are calibres like 380 ACP which have a multitude of generally accepted designations (e.g. 9mm Short, 9mm Kurz, 9mm Corto, 9mm Court, 9mm Browning, 9x17 and probably others) which, depending on where you're brass comes from may appear on the headstamp. It's safe to say that what passes for a system at CFR won't have every valid designation for the same cartridge in their reference data much less the possible interchangeable combinations that may be possessed for the same firearm.

And it's also possible (but not advisable) to fire 9mmK in a 9mmP pistol.

Re: Strange experiance buying ammo
Back in the days when Tokarev handgun ammo was semi unobtainium, I used to take a 223 Rem case, cut it down to 25mm, reamed it out a bit and hand loaded it so I can enjoy my Tokarev pistol. I still have some of those rounds left. Makes for an interesting conversation piece at a SAPS roadblock...

Re: Strange experiance buying ammo
This is true, but one would hope, apparently in vain, that someone who seeks employment at a specialist store, has at least enough interest in the subject to do a bit of light reading about it.
Of course, as we know, this might have been the case years ago, but no longer.
