We all have to start off somewhere when we start a new job. Fair enough. You cant know everything by lunch time. But you need some seasoned guy to show the ropes and advise.
But when you know nothing, and are cocky on top of that, well that's a recipe for disaster.

I would assume that there is no shortage of knowledgable gun people with the appropriate competency to work in gun shops.

I also assume that very few gun shops can afford to employ these people. Since they have knowledge and aptitude, they are employable in a variety of other fields, where the remuneration prospects are much better.

Agree with that. Another possible consideration is that expertise in firearms related topics doesn't come for free except for a very small number of very lucky people. Everyone else spends a lot of their own money developing it and working in a gunshop doesn't pay those bills.
