    I would assume that there is no shortage of knowledgable gun people with the appropriate competency to work in gun shops.

    I also assume that very few gun shops can afford to employ these people. Since they have knowledge and aptitude, they are employable in a variety of other fields, where the remuneration prospects are much better.

    Agree with that. Another possible consideration is that expertise in firearms related topics doesn't come for free except for a very small number of very lucky people. Everyone else spends a lot of their own money developing it and working in a gunshop doesn't pay those bills.
