Default 4 gauge and 8 gauge shotguns

    Hi everyone.

I am just very curious - is there anyone here that owns, let alone shoots, a 4 or 8 gauge shotgun?

As a 4 gauge (or 4-bore) shotgun is such a massive, heavy-caliber firearm with a bore diameter of 1.052 inches, If there is anyone that has one, their shoulder is probably so black and blue, they can't type to answer you.

Very interesting read up on them though ...

I would imagine those are muzzle loaded, black powder guns. I remember seeing a 4 or 8 bore about 30 years ago, by agunsmith somewhere in Buccleuch. I have been involved in shotgun shooting for many years, and I haven't even come across a 10 guage shotgun, or even 10 guage ammo. Every now and then, a 10 guage muzzle loader pops up at the Classic Arms auctions.

I had a set of 10g barrels for a Pedersoli .72 kodiak double rifle. Default load was 41 grams of shot using 120 grains of FFG black powder. It was fun!!!

Four- and eight-gauge guns were available as rifles and shotguns and in both muzzle loading and breech loading versions.

I've got 4 and 8 gauge shotgun cartridges in my collection but I've never seen a shotgun in either calibre (breech or muzzle loading) in the flesh.
