Slide Milling - Durban

These were my exact words after getting off the phone to Graham at Natal Gun Company. I figured they might be a good shout because of their reputation for the work they do on rifles, but no joy.

It is looking likely that up to Pretoria the slide will go to MRST, but their lead time in 1-2 weeks, eina.

MRST is the way.

Call them, perhaps you can book and pay for a slot in advance and then ship the slide at the last minute. That way you wouldn't be without your gun for as long.
You would have to make sure that the logistics are tight though.

MRST is excellent.

They put a low profile gas block and new hand guard on my old AR while I waited.

They specialize in milling pistol slides, so you can't go wrong.

Question: Is only a qualified gunsmith allowed to mill the slide for a scope fitting? It does not affect the operation of the FA.

Im not talking of logistice like keeping gun in safe, FA register etc.

When i spoke to MRST, they were happy for me to book a slot (eg. say Monday two weeks from now) and then arrive on the day, give them the slide and wait/go shopping somewhere else while they mill it for me.

So if you can plan it with a trip to PTA, it works out perfectly.

My understanding is that the only things a non-gunsmith isn't allowed to do is make a firearm (actually, even a gunsmith isn't allowed to do that), make or shorten a barrel or change a firearm to shoot full auto. And possibly carry out a deactivation (go figure).

The problem is that a non-gunsmith can't be in possession of someone else's slide. Or barrel or frame.
So if you could look over his shoulder, it would be fine. But machinists mostly don't like to work like that.
