    Default Starting IDPA

probably a bit off topic, sorry.... i'm qualifying in Jan for the IDPA, the whole NSO thing.

any tips? i've read some comments on other forums, that you shouldnt specially train/practice for the qualifier, because you could qualify in a level too high for your current skill level.

currently working my way through the Magpul handgun dvd set. fingers still raw from sunday's constant doublefeed/malfunction drills :)

my father is also interested in doing the NSO in Jan.

I've given this it's own thread because I believe it's a topic of it's own.

My thoughts no don't shoot the classifier constantly as a practise run. Rather practise a series of well rounded skills which the classifier tests well.

Shoot every classified with the goal of shooting master. Don't aim to marksman or vomit novice but aim for master. This doesn't mean there's anything wrong with being a novice or marksman just that aiming for that is a fail in mindset. Your aim should always be to win not just being happy whatever.

Lastly there is some outstanding stuff in the Magpul DVDs but it's no substitute for proper training. Get a decent grounding from an instructor with a clue.

If its your first classifier, focus on being safe not fast.

    Good advice all round.

Do not try to force a classification - you will get where you should be as you gain experience and by natural progression.

+100 to the points made by the others. The details of the classification strings are available on the SADPA website I and do not think it will hurt to run through the strings once or twice as preparation. I do however fully agree with T that your training should not focus on the classifier exclusively. Follow a well rounded training routine and progress naturally in the sport as you gain more experience.

Enjoy Jeff and the boys are a good bunch of guys.
Get involved early and always help as a club member, all help will be much appreciated and helps to lighten the load for all.

Stay muzzle concious, and keep the snot picker off the bang lever to avoid trouble.

    WELCOME!!

Agree with GG it is always very much appreciated if you arrive early to help build the course. Also always be willing to help stick over the holes. For the rest just try to relax. Accuracy is a lot more important than outright speed.
