Balisong

Any flippers on the forum? Iv noticed we have access to very few decent balisongs here in SA, infact I purchased mine overseas

I played with them in my youth, but more from a fun, juggling kind of show-offy thing. I'm a big proponent of fixed blades for SD.

Can't really comment on the quality of locally available balisongs- I've only really seen the flea market/tobacconist blades, though IIRC cold steel recently produced a balisong.

I can recommend Michael Janich's dvd "mastering the balisong knife- revised and updated" as well as Jeff Imada's books for learning the techniques.

Actually I picked up a copy of Jeff Imadas Advanced Balisong manual yesterday. Im currntly using a Crossman balisong as its the best I have been able to find without going over the R2000 mark. Im carrying kabar TDI and a Boker for SD, only interested in balisongs for tricks

I think Sharp Edge has a couple of the Benchmade balis in stock, and some years back they carried the Spydie and Cold Steel versions. They still carry a couple of others too, but those are pretty much the flea-market stuff that prepare2win spoke of above. I also regard them as novelty pieces -"nice to have" like an old Italian switchblade, but pretty much surpassed in the design stakes by today's production utility and SD folders.

Sharpedge has a Benchmade model 51 and its little brother in stock, I checked them out, very nice...

I also want to get one to play with!

I was at the China Mall on Saturday and saw one there for R80 but it looked kind of low quality. When I got home I started surfing the internet trying to find more info on it and I found the one on Sharp Edge's website, a Cold Steel Paradox 24P Balisong (gorgeous!!)

But when I looked on Cold Steel's website it said the following about all the balisongs they are manufacturing:

"Now Cold Steel is proud to introduce a completely legal version of the butterfly knife that we call The Paradox™. It’s designed from the ground up to specifically mimic a traditional Balisong or Butterfly knife in every respect but one – it can’t be opened with one hand! Its twin handles feature two integral springs that are similar to a conventional slip joint folder. They are designed to rotate 180 degrees around the blade’s unique split tang and use strong opposing spring tension to lock the blade open or hold it firmly closed"

I want the knife to play with, learn the tricks and all that (not to carry as a SD knife). So obviously I don't want it to stay open.

I'll look/phone around some more during the week because I REALLY WANT ONE!!
If anybody knows where I can get one please, please let me know, I'd really appreciate it!!

I want to try my hand at making one though. I have made a friction folder so far and next on the list is a Balisong. G10 handles with a 1055 carbon edge, a broad edge (since I dont have the tools to do quality locks).

Anyway. The finest Balisongs I have seen:
