Mount position of RDS
This is probably a totally theoretic question, but in a perfect world where you have the option of mounting a RDS on a tactical carbine either on the receiver or forward on the rails, which would be preferable?
Would it be better to have the sight closer to your eye and the rear sight when having to shoot from an awkward position, or rather closer to the front sight?

Re: Mount position of RDS
I prefer a more forward mount for better field of view.

Re: Mount position of RDS
Generally most prefer a forward mount since your peripheral vision is better and you have less tendency to fall into the trap of wanting to 'live in the tube' with some optics.
OTOH I shot the Pincus course with Khumba's beautiful little LM6 with rear mounted Trijicon RMR and had no problems at all with it...wish I could say the same for my slow, back and knee bunged up, old-azzed body!

Re: Mount position of RDS
On the AR platform it seems the most prevalent position is over the magwell (which allows for magnifier use as well) which on an AR and shooting square on is mounted to the rear.
I prefer the same "type" of mount on my LM and that is low mount iron sight co-witness just forward of the rear irons.
I find it faster acquiring the dot with a rearward mount than with a forward mount and field of view is a non player imo if you shoot two eyes open because with RDS I do not focus on the dot but on the target - that is the beauty of RDS.

Re: Mount position of RDS
I also prefer it with forward mount. For the reasons mentioned increases your perceived field of view. And reduces to desire to live in the screen.

You also need a mount with Co-Witness. And QD mounts in the event of a complete optic failure that rendered it impossible to see through.

Re: Mount position of RDS
Thanks for the advice guys. If I someday get to adding a RDS to the MP5 it seems I will have to mount it on the receiver. I really like the Eotech that Swattie has on his Roni and it seems B&T does manufacture a rail for it that will fit the MP5. But I also like the idea of a Trijcon that doesn't require batteries, but still have to get more info on the mounting options.

Let us not revisit the "car shooting" incident!
