    Lightbulb Choices of shottie.

    Hi there.

I'm in the market for a shottie now... pistol lisence and comp is at the CFR eventually and I need another application to keep my mind from chasing the pistols app even though it won't help.
I have been looking at 2 shotties in particular and would like some opinions on the two if possible.

    1. Remington 870 pump (this is known to me as an awesome rifle)
    2. Maverick 88 security model (apparently made by mossberg but not sure about it's quality)

The shottie would be used for practical shooting and one day when I get my LM will be part of my 3 gun clan.

Any advice or criticism is welcome on my choices.

    Cheers Dyl

I like the remington Shot guns.

The US army use a the M870 among thier various models. But the marines have been known to use mossbergs.

So find the model that is battle tested and feel comfortable.

Either way, I like the option of a realtree or mossy oak finish on the Remingtons.

I am probably going to get lambasted for this but i dont think there is too much technology differences between shotguns. although there must be quality differences.

The 870 would be first choice. Beautiful gun with lots of add ons available. I bought a winchester 1300. I had the choice between a Mossberg 500 and the winchester. The winchester was mint, so that was the deciding factor. There are as many add ons for the mossberg as the 870 so imo they are also a good choice. When I bought my first shotgun many years ago I looked a a maverick. The salesman put me off it a bit 'cause it only had a single bar connected to the pump. Said these often "bind" when cycled fast. Don't know if it is true. Maybe others could comment, but a guy at our club uses his often for 3 Gun and has had no problems.

I wouldnt want a Mossberg or a Maverick for free.

    Get an 870 or a Winchester 1200/1300

Reason? Is the quality up to S#$t? Never put my hands on the maverick but the 870 feels good.

As far as I know the police use some Mavericks. Lots of security companies use them as well. No one can rape a gun like a security guard. And yet they keep on going.

I have a Mossberg A 500 and truth be told I do get a failure to eject every now and then. But I've used it on some advanced training including the Tactical Instructor course, and it worked well enough to end up quite far from last. I'd trust it for self defence.

Neither are tier one shotguns, but they do work. A sharp stick is better then nothing. If given the choice between a hammer and a Maverick, I'd take the Maverick. And spend the price difference on ammo and training.

You and just about everyone else with 500.

Given the choice between a 500 and a Maverick, Ill take the latter.

Sold my M500. Much happier with the Defender.

The choice wasn't Maverick and a stick it was a Maverick or 870.

On that same instructors course we saw both Mossbergs and Mavericks suffer failures. None of the 870's or Defenders did. We saw the exact same thing on the Rob Haught course.

If choosing a gun "it kinda works and there are worse choices" aren't really the system one should use.

Afaik the SAPS use Republic Arms and Berettas.
