SOG AEGIS Impressions!

I was lucky and became the owner of a SOG Aegis a month ago and I feel that I have some experience with this knife that I can share.

I decided to give my personal insets based on my use of the knife and not to try and do a review because there are others imminently more qualified to do reviews such as this very nice one here

with some very nice pics and good detail on the Cryogenic Heat Treatment and the workings of the SOG Assisted Technology.

I have been carrying this knife for the past month everyday and used it in varying utility applications.

Impressions:

The Aegis

1) is very nicely finished overall

2) is very easy to carry due to the light weight

3) sits low profile in the pocket due to the pocket clip design

4) sits securely when clipped into the pocket with retention provided by the good tension on the pocket clip and the rubber inserts underneath the pocket in the scales

5) blade design and the full flat grind of the blade makes for an excellent cutter - I used it on rope, paracord, food, cardboard, paper etc and it really excels at slicing.

6) the blade came shaving sharp out of the box.

7) was very easy to resharpen when I felt the need to do so for the first time last week. I usually have to reprofile my blades to an inclusive 40 degree angle to enable me to do frequent touch ups on the Spyderco Sharpmaker rather than having to do the effort of sharpening a blunt blade on the Gatco every time. I touched up the edge of the Aegis last week and it was real easy on the Sharpmaker and took me less than a minute to get the edge back to shaving sharp.

8) assist opening works great and I soon got the hang of it once I realised that I should not follow the opening stud with my thumb like I would on a manual opening knife - just give it a "bump" and it flies open = very handy and could be a real benefit if one carries it as a support hand backup knife because it is so easy to use that opening it with the support hand is real easy.

9) blade coating seems to be very good and after the month's use there are no marks or scratches showing.

Over all this an excellent knife that I can personally recommend as an EDC urban utility knife.

What do you use to reprofile your blades? Is it Gatco? What model?

The Aegis will also do a good job as a defensive folder in most any grip.

I you use hammer grip just watch out that you grip forward on the handle - a tight grip to the rear can maybe cause the lock to be dissengaged with the thumb pressing rearward in a tensioned hammer grip.

My favorite system for re-profiling the edge is a Gatco, not sure of the model. I use a SPyderco Sharpmaker to frequently touch up the edge.

Imo any user that carries a knife for utility and sd should have some sort of a sharpening system that he knows how to use to ensure that he carries a sharp blade.

I have two sharpeners:
1. stone mounted on a wooden block, which I use mostly for my larger blades;
2. fine Lansky bone to finish it off. [both from Sharper Edge in Sandton]

However, I am aware of my inconsistent approach angle, which result in a longer sharpening time. I personally like sharpening my knives, but my wife thinks that I lost my mind when she hears the sharpening noises coming out of my cave. He he...

So, I am looking for more precise tool, and I like Khumba's point on 40 deg inclusive edge.
