Legal minimum hunting calibres?
I often meets Scandinavians who tells me, that they have been I the southern parts of Africa hunting with their 6,5x55mm SE and shooting many of the species of game with said calibre. But a closer look on the various legal minimum calibres leaves me wondering.
For example is minimum requirements for Kudu:
Namibia: Min 7mm and 2700joules
Zimbabwe: Min 7mm and 3000joules
Northern Cape, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and North West: Min bullet diameter .265 (the info I possess directly state, that 6,5mm = .264 or less is not allowed for Kudu, Wildebeest etc)!
Only in Limpopo, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Orange Free State and Natal is minimum calibre down at 5,6mm (the 6,5x55mm SE is .264) allowed for Kudu etc.
My question is whether living up to these rules rest with the visiting hunter or the PH?

Re: Legal minimum hunting calibres?
I would think it falls onto both with the farm/PH possibly facing a bigger boot if caught.
There has been some very heated debates over minimum calibre on this site. My personal opinion is (for hunting/not culling) using an optimal bullet and calibre is key and more ethical than something that might suffice.

I can’t agree more. The sport hunters’ main responsibility is to harvest the game in as humane a way as well possible and small calibres on big game certainly doesn’t ensure that.

Re: Legal minimum hunting calibres?
No he may not decide lower limits, because that will be against the law. I'm speculating, but if the farm owner tells you differently, it's maybe because he thinks that it is something that is not enforced?
Can't speak for Namibia where I think they are more effective on policing their fauna and flora regulations, but in South Africa I've never ever been questioned about which caliber I used while hunting from any government agency. Keep in mind that most, if not all hunting is done on private property with controlled access. Not a lot of Game Rangers hanging about. Unless forensics (doubtful if this will warrant such measures) are used, I doubt it very much that the contrary can be proven after the fact. Chances are more likely that you'll be stopped in a roadblock and asked for a permit if you transport meat, rather than asked what caliber you've used.
When it comes to dangerous game, its another ball game wrt minimum calibers used.
Irrespective of local regulation, rather use enough gun. I see you mention Wildebeest. I personally will not recommend the 6.5 x 55. I owned one and it's a awesome caliber, but... the Wildebeest is not call the 'poor man's Buffalo' for nothing.

GameFarmer,
Thank you very much for your answers. That is exactly what I have been writing in my Danish articles.
My own calibres have ever since my start I Sierra Leone in -75 been .30-06, .375HH and .416 Rigby.

You are welcome. I see we share a lot with regards to calibers. Nice calibers that you use, especially the 416 Rigby. Absolute classic.

Are game fenced (P3 Permit) farms subject to caliber restrictions for various specie animals?

Re: Legal minimum hunting calibres?
As far as I understand it, we are currently in a state of flux as far as certain hunting related legislation is concerned and not much that is printed will actually stand up in court becuase it is very difficult to prove. Be that as it may ... we should still do our level best to adhere to what is legislated and convince others to do the same. Some of the legislation is very vague eg it looks as if you can shoot a Buff in the E Cape with anything but a 5,56 rimfire or less! Absurd to say the least! What this means is that it looks to be legal to shoot the bigger animals with .22 centerfires - I hope I am wrong in this and misread the whole thing. The state MUST talk more to hunting organisations to set acceptable, sensible minimums and then pay officials to enforce them!
