FN 308 Who knows what works for accuracy
picked up a old FN in a realy worn external shape. No blueing left -- wet- rotted stock and a barrel action that rattled in the stock.Blued the metal - Filed and neatened, polished the action - filed squared polished and worked trigger, Bedded the action up to the chamber floated the barrel and tested some ammo.Using 165 Hornady BTSP PMP S335 and PMP large rifle primers I get 2 shotsgroups of 1" and the third always a bit wider at 100m. good enough for hunting, dont like that. Any tips. Full bed barrel ?/
How do I get better on a 308 Fn.To me 6 hots in a match box is a rfle that is right.

What condition are the lands and grooves in?
Have you removed all the copper fouling from the barrel?
Try having the muzzle recut to an 11 degree target crown.
Bullet seating depth can have a large impact on accuracy. He is best who is trained in the severest school! Fear no man.

Re: FN 308 Who knows what works for accuracy
Lands -grooves like new- crown still unmarked. We had a 1mm jump and made it 1.5mm today and the group has tightened.Funny thing is it shoots best with pmp max suggested load --- no pressure sighns at all - wondering if I should up the load as well

Re: FN 308 Who knows what works for accuracy
The 2 close and one wide shot sounds like something touching the barrel when it gets hot. You really need a chrony to record speeds as chambers differ and only speed will show what is really happening. Changing the COL = seating depth is the way to get your sweet spot. Get all the parameters and then a prediction can be made.

Chroni = 2551/2545 ft/ps COL 70mm well bedded to end of chamber barrel over floated to be sure 2mm gap. 2 tight 3rd wide and then Ok -------&^%$%$#&% got me and many baffled -- its so predictable even with other shooters.

Does it have a mauser type exractor? If so check for contact marks on the outside of the extractor. In a discussion elsewhere this was found to be the cause of flyers.
How long do you wait between shots?

Re: FN 308 Who knows what works for accuracy
On Mauser type extractors (with the big extractor claw) You sometimes find a contact between the outside edge of the extractor and the barrel, which could lead to irregular contacts and cause flyers. Put some Indian ink on the outside of extractor and cycle bolt. If there's a shiny area in the Indian ink, relieve carefully. Maybe better to have a gunsmith check it out..
