3 SHOT GROUPING AT 500M WITH REM VSSF 308 WIN
I would like to start off by saying that before the attached pic of the grouping is viewed I am still in shock of what accuracy my rifle produced at 500m on Saturday. The rifle has always shot extremely tight at 100m seeing frequently 3 shot groups almost in one hole provided I do my part. This Saterday seemed no different and my first 3 shot group measured around 7mm. The second group was alittle tighter and was around 6mm. A group of us decided then to start shooting gongs out to 500m and have a liitle competiton. With it being all square after the first round we decided to make the competion alittle more interesting and have a 3 shot grouping competition at 500m. It was a fairly quiet day in the mid morning with the wind not doing to much with the exception of the mirage. I planned to set down my scope by 4 clicks due to the mirage but instead set it up 4 clicks hence why the grouping was high off the patch, a silly and careless mistake. The wind I set was 1.5MOA right and I waited for the wind to pick up and to blow abit of the mirage away before shooting. Since the beginning of the year we have shot quite regulary from 500m - 800m and I have found that it is an incrediable help with wind reading and mirage.
The rifle I use is a standard factory Remington .308 win VSSF. It has a Nightforce
5.5-22x50 with a nightforce 20MOA picatinny rail and mounts.
I reload myself and use Sierra 168gr Match, Lapua Brass, CCI BR2 primers and S335 with 40,5gr. The rounds were neck sized using Forester dies and a Redding Competition seating die.
I used 2 old sand bags and a rear bunny bag from Safari and outdoor.
The 3 shot group measured 22mm at 500m. The windage I adjusted for was spot on in line with the exception on elevation going up the 4 clicks instead of coming down for the mirage.Attachment 4625
I was fortuante enough to have 2 witnesses to this with one being a PH and the other a very respected dealer and gunsmith. The patch is not in the photo and is just below the photo line using a cell phone. It was shot on the WCSU range in Atlantis, Cape Town.
I myself know that a fluke can happen hence the reason why I declined to shoot another and decided to end by day of shooting on that note.
I won our fun competition.
Best regards,
Wesley
