Come to the Eastern Cape and kick a bush.
A warthog is sure to run off.

There is a spot just above Lephalale (Ellisras) which I can highly recommend. Plenty of exceptional sized warthog walking around the bush. Shot one this past weekend after slaughter weighing 48kg's

Are these animals tasty? What does it work out per kilogram?

If paying for them when hunting, I paid R450 for a big male a couple of months back, weighed in at 56kg's. Regarding the processing:

Made some biltong of a hindquarter, very nice, just keep the fat off, it tastes crap. Smoked a few fillets - qute nice, also cabanossi, cheesegrillers and salami, but whatever your imagination can dream up

    Bilting - R10/kg
    Salami, Cabanossi, Cheesegrillers - R30/kg
    Smoking - R3.60/kg

Yes, on provision that you're standing right next to it and rest the muzzle just behind the ear, aiming towards the brain.

If you can't get that close, use a proper hunting, center fire caliber. Most will suffice with proper shot placement.

Don't ever underestimate the Warthog. They're as tough as nails.

Whatever you do, use an appropriate sized calibre to shoot them. To put it into perspective. An Impala is about 60kg (nice big one) standing in the veld. A warthog can easily be 85-90kg, if you are going after a big one.

The male of 48kg's went down with a single shot to the heart, right from the front, from 60m with a .243. That is after it charged straight at me, missing me by less tha a meter (had to dodge the charge) and eventually found 250m away from where it had been shot. In the bushveld, 250m can be long distance to track through thick grass and sickle bush!!

They also have the tendency to run away at flat out speed when hit, and often going into their burrows. We had two incidents last season where we had to dig up trophies from under the ground, as they do not forrage too far away from their burrows. In my books, the only plains game more dangerous than a warthog is an injured bluewildebeest.

Enjoy the hunt, hope you get a prime example!

    Regards
    Adam

Yes I have heard stories about how tough these animals can be!! But you guys have confirmed it. maybe a a .44 rifle will provide better stoping power?? I can also use a 6mm rifle at over 3000 fps should also do the trick. obviuosly use the correct ammo.
