Default Advice on pump-action 12g please

    Hi All,

I have just joined this site as I am sure that I will get better and more honest advice than trawling through lots of gun shop websites!

I am a pretty experienced gun owner with past professional police & miltary experience including hunting the world's most dangerous game (the type that shoots back) :-)

I use a customised Govt Model .45 for carry/self defence but want to add a short-barelled 12g pump action to my collection for home defence (mainly for wife to use). I have never owned a pump action, but have a lot of experience with semi autos (Remington 1100, Beretta, Browning) - but of course you can't obtain these legally in SA

    My Questions:

    1. Recommended Make/Model for home defence purposes
    2. Recommended Supplier (Johannesburg North)
    3. Recommended load for home defence, i.e. AAA, SSG, SpSG?
    4. Recommended justification/reason for ownership for licencing purposes?
    5. Any other thing I should think of?

    Many Thanks

    AlanJ

    Welcome!

Will advise you to go post this question in the shotgun section.

    Rem 870 or Win 1300
    Youll have to phone around
With this youll have to play but Id say SG
    Sportshooting
Lots and lots of practice and training!

PS: If this is for the wife... dont ever piss her off!

    Peace!

Rubbish, don't know who told you that. They are obtainable if you have a dedicated status of some sort.

Look for a nice Winchester Defender. Failing that an 870 if money is not a problem.

As to what load to use the answer is: it depends. Pattern loads in your gun and see whats best.

As to licencing, join an accredited association, get dedicated status and licence for sport.

since when can semi-autos not be legally obtained?????

    1. winchester 1300 Defender (everyone wants a 870 but nobody can ever find them :( )
    2. better to find one privately than at gun shops, they tend to charge far more than is actually fair. But best is to call around.
    3. I use 3x3 GB's (9 balls of 9mm(, but LG SG are all GTG)
    4. Well, if you want it for defence and dont already have a license for defense then apply for it as such. If you want it for sport shooting then apply for that, depends on your club and such? Will you be licensing it or will it be going on the Mrs's name? That will also influence the decision.
    5. Training with bigT and lots of ammo to practice with it...oh and a hard hat for when your wife wants to smack you because you said she wont get a fright the first time she shoots it :))

    good luck with the purchase
