Re: .45 ACP Test Load results
A separate crimp operation is not necessary by default on pistol cartridges. Seating and crimping can be one step. If you prefer seat and taper in two steps, great, but you don't have to.
Any make of die if not setup properly will bulge the cases on crimp.
There's a how-to for one-step crimp here :

Re: .45 ACP Test Load results
What Paul said.
Taper crimping should be done separately, after seating - 4th station, 4th die.

Thanks Adri, and everyone for contributing. We are all the wiser for it. I sure am.
Best regards,

Re: .45 ACP Test Load results
We are all familar with the neck sealants used in military (and presumably other factory ammo). It is also used to seal primers. The purpose is primarily water proofing. I have never heard of it being used for reloading. But specifically, if you need to resort to some sort of glue to prevent bullet set-back, something is wrong. Secure bullet retention is based entirely on neck tension, but for some reason you are not getting enough of it. Off hand I can think of three possibilities, the sizing die is too big, the cases have lost elasticity from use, the bullet is too small. But I'd need to see it all to really figure it out.

Re: .45 ACP Test Load results
I agree on the 4th station taper crimp.
I have seen the same issues but changed to Dillon 45ACP Loading dies and the problems vanished BUT old or soft brass will not help. I have heard of people using Lee factory crimp dies but have no experience with them myself. These size tighter than two sets of Lee dies I have used.
Lead bullets do not have this issue. I suppose you could get an isolated case but you'd have to put some effort in.
In my experience the hardest brass is Norinco. PMP/Federal/RP/Norma/S&B/CCI/Frontier/Aguila all seem fair but HP is the softest.

Hi, Dick
Thanks for the advice. Are you in the JHB area, specifically East Rand? If you are, perhaps we could hook up and you could have a look at my set up?

Re: .45 ACP Test Load results
Hi, Samizat45,
I use PMP brass, which I scavenge from new factory ammo. I reload my once-fired brass. So, relatively new. Can't figure this one out, man. Lol!

Re: .45 ACP Test Load results
I bought myself a carbide 3 die set from Lee for the .45ACP. Is the seating/crimping die in it a taper crimp die?

Re: .45 ACP Test Load results
Mothboy, I do not think so.
The Lee 4 die sets include a taper crimp die. As far as I am aware (deduced by looking at my 9mmP Lee 4 die set), the seater in your 3die set can be used to put a mild roll crimp onto your rounds.
