Re: newbi
This is simple. In order to buy a muzzle loading firearm you need to be in possession of a competency certificate for Muzzle Loading Firearm. Do that at a accredited training provider. Once you have that then can buy as many Muzzle Loaders as you want and they do not require a license. What you do need is a black powder permit to buy and possess Black Powder. To get this you need a Muzzle Loader Competency and you go to the Inspector of Explosives and apply for a permit. This is not a lengthy process, took me 3 days. You also need a serial number of your black powder rifle.
Ok so you have your competency and you want to buy a rifle for hunting. I would recommend the Pedersoli Rolling Block, costs around R7500 and is available in .50 cal. It comes with hunting sights and it can take a scope if you want.

If you want something more traditional, take a look at the Lyman Deerstalker or the Pedersoli County Hunter.

I have the Lyman Deerstalker and it is a very accurate rifle and it is nice and compact for hunting purposes. I would recommend you stick to percussion models and not the flint lock.

Re: newbi
In the new draft changes to legislation they say you will need a licence for a cap and ball revolver, they still have to decide what competencies you need for these.
